open day

When most people think about careers, they think about job titles. Engineer. Technician. Process Operator. Laboratory Analyst.

Yet talk to people who work in industry and you’ll quickly discover that job titles only tell part of the story. What really defines a career is the problems you spend your days solving.

Some people solve problems that keep factories running safely and efficiently. Others find ways to reduce energy consumption, improve manufacturing processes or maintain the technology that powers modern industry. Some work on developing products, while others focus on testing, quality or reliability.

The common thread is that engineering is about finding solutions. It’s about understanding how things work, identifying what could work better and applying your knowledge to make a difference.

That’s why choosing an apprenticeship is about much more than securing a job. It’s about discovering the kind of challenges that excite you and the kind of future you want to help build.

Every industry needs problem solvers

Look around and you’ll see engineering everywhere.

The energy that powers our homes. The medicines that improve our health. The products we use every day. The transport systems that keep people and goods moving.

Behind each of them are skilled people solving problems, often ones that most of us never even notice.

How can a manufacturing process become more efficient? How can equipment be maintained to prevent costly downtime?

How can companies reduce waste and improve sustainability? How can new technologies be introduced safely and effectively?

These are not problems that can be solved by chance. They require knowledge, practical skills and a willingness to learn.

That is exactly what apprenticeships are designed to develop.

The best way to understand engineering is to experience It

For many young people, deciding what to do after school or college can feel overwhelming.

There is no shortage of advice, but it can be difficult to know which path is right for you without seeing it for yourself.

That’s one of the reasons we host Open Evenings at TTE.

An Open Evening isn’t simply an opportunity to look around our facilities. It’s a chance to gain a better understanding of the industries we support, the training we deliver and the opportunities available through apprenticeships.

More importantly, it’s an opportunity to ask questions. Questions like: what does a typical day look like? Or what skills are employers looking for, what industries could I work in and what progression opportunities are available?

The answers can often challenge perceptions and open doors to opportunities that people may not previously have considered.

Looking beyond the next step

One of the biggest misconceptions about apprenticeships is that they are only about what happens immediately after you leave school or college.

In reality, they are about where you could be in five, 10 or 20 years from now.

The skills developed through an engineering apprenticeship can lead to careers across a wide range of industries, creating opportunities for personal growth, professional development and long-term success.

That journey starts with a decision, but it’s a decision that deserves careful thought.

The people who gain the most from their careers are often those who take the time to explore their options, ask questions and understand where different pathways can lead.

Discover what’s possible

Applications for our September 2027 intake will open in November, and our next Open Evening takes place in December.

If you’re beginning to think about your future, now is the perfect time to start exploring what engineering and apprenticeships could offer, because when you choose engineering, you’re not simply choosing a job. You’re choosing to become someone who solves problems, creates solutions and helps shape the industries that keep the world moving.

And that’s a career worth discovering.
